Title : Immortal India Volume 4
Author : J. H. Dave
Pages : 168
Availability: Currently out of stock.

About the book:

Pilgrimage places are on or near the banks of a sacred river or a lake or near the sea. Usually holy shrines are situated on these spots which are naturally beautiful and peaceful. Before starting on a pilgrimage one should fast, offer prayers with devotion to Ganesha and to his own ancestors, offer salutations to learned Brahmins and saintly people. He must go with a pleasant mind and observe certain vows. After returning he should perform sraddhas. The dress for a pilgrim should be modest and he should take a pradakshina of his own village or town before going. He should not accept any gift.
Like the other volumes, this one too begins with blessings and a message from H H Sri Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. Various rivers and their religious importance are given in this book. Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Godavari, Kaveri, Mahandi and others have been described in this volume. Indians do not consider rivers as merely bodies of water. Each one is personified, worshipped and spoken in the female or male form. Ganga is the most sacred of all rivers and is mother to Indians. She starts from the Himalayas and empties herself in the Bay of Bengal. During her long journey she passes through several states and several towns. All these places are considered sacred.
